REGISTRATION
::::::::::::::::::::
If you use Autonet beyond the initial trial period, you must register. Legal
and ethical issues aside, why should you register? First and foremost, it
will show me that people are interested in Autonet, and will encourage me to
provide updates. Second, it will encourage me to continue to write other
useful programs.
NOTE: To register, please fill out and mail the enclosed registration form.
Registration is $10 (U.S.). This entitles you to legally use Autonet, as well
as to receive a registered copy of Autonet. The registered version of Autonet
will let you take advantage of these awesome features:
o Customizable Tearlines!
o Semaphore Files!
o Free Updates!
::::::::::::::::::::
DESCRIPTION
::::::::::::::::::::
Autonet is a utility which enables Renegade sysops to add an Internet mail
sub-board to their message bases, provided they are hooked up to Fidonet.
After Internet mail is exported from Renegade, Autonet tosses the messages
into your mailer's netmail directory, and does the following:
o Scans the echo directory for *.MSG files.
o Changes the TO: field to the one specified in the configuration file.
Most likely this will be 'UUCP'.
o Changes the destination address to the one specified in the configuration
file. Most likely this will be your local UUCP gateway's address.
o Changes the netmail flags to those specified in the configuration.
o Tosses the messages into the netmail directory specified in the
configuration file.
NOTE: No purging is done. That is left up to RENEMAIL!
While I use this program only in the above manner, it can be used to change
the destination of netmail messages to any user at any address, whether it be
to a UUCP gateway or not.
When internet mail arrives at your system, Importer does the following:
o Scans all *.MSG files in your mailer's netmail directory, and compares the
TO: field (replacing any '.' or '_' characters to spaces) with your
USERS.DAT file.
o If a message is identified as an internet message, the message wasn't
written locally, and a match is found between either a users real name or
handle, it tosses the netmail into the echo directory specified in the
configuration file.
NOTE: The *.MSG files that are imported into the echo directory are purged.
Any other netmail files are left alone.
::::::::::::::::::::
CONFIGURATION
::::::::::::::::::::
To set up Autonet, you must do the following:
I. Run ANSETUP.EXE
When this file is executed, you will see the following screen:
ANSetup v1.4 - AutoNet Netmail Gateway Utility Setup
Copyright(c) 1994 by Jeffrey Miyares. All Rights Reserved
Your Address:
Gateway Program:
Address of Gateway: (individual explaination below)
Echomail Dir:
Netmail Dir:
Renegade Data Dir:
Semaphore File:
Custom Tearline:
Netmail Flags: None
Press <ESC> to Quit
You can move between the entries with the up and down arrows. The
currently selected field will be highlighted WHITE. To change a field,
press <ENTER> (it will turn to WHITE on BLUE) and type in your changes.
Press <ENTER> when your changes are correct.
a. Your Address:
Very simple. The address to which you would have any replies sent to.
It should be the same network as the Gateway program. Enter it in
Zone:Net/Node format.
[NOTE: Points are not supported]
b. Gateway Program:
This is what the TO: field will be changed to. Usually this will be
'UUCP'. Make sure that there are no trailing spaces, or extra
characters, or UUCP won't recognize your mail!
c. Address of Gateway:
This is the address of the Gateway Program in Zone:Net/Node format.
[NOTE: Points are not supported]
d. Echomail Dir:
This is the directory where the *.MSG files are scanned to/from by
RENEMAIL. Does not matter if it includes a trailing '\'.
e. Netmail Dir:
This is the directory where your front-end mailer keeps netmail
messages. Does not matter if it includes a trailing '\'.
f. Renegade Data Dir:
This is the directory where Renegade stores its USERS.DAT file. Does
not matter if it includes a trailing '\'.
g. Semaphore File:
This file tells your mailer that new mail is waiting to be sent out.
For FrontDoor, this file is FDRESCAN.NOW and is held in the executable
directory. You MUST specify an entire path and filename. If nothing
is specified, nothing will be done.
[ NOTE: Available in Registered Version Only ]
h. Custom Tearline:
This will replace the incoming and outgoing tearline. Make your system
stand out of the masses with an original tearline!
[ NOTE: Available in Registered Version Only ]
i. Netmail Flags:
These are the netmail flags that the outgoing messages will have set.
You can select the following flags with these keys:
KEY
---
P - Private
Usually this should be set.
C - Crash
If you route the mail through your hub (if your UUCP site is not
local to you, which mine isn't) do NOT set this flag, as most
mailers will not route mail with Crash status. If your UUCP site
IS local, by all means, set this. It will force your mailer to
send out new messages as soon as they arrive into your netmail
directory.
H - Hold
Usually this should not be set.
K - Kill/Sent
Forces your mailer to kill messages after they are sent.
[NOTE: The Local flag is ALWAYS set]
j. Press <ESC> to Quit:
This will quit the setup program and save the configuration file.
II. Set up a message base similar to the following:
3. Base type : EchoMail
Message path: D:\ECHO\INTERNET\ <- Must be same as I-d (see above)
N. Net Address : 1:157/593 <- You MUST use the address with the
same Zone as the UUCP node.
M. Mail flags : KS-/TI <- Usually you SHOULD set the Internet
Flag. This shuts off the user's
ability to specify a TO: field. If
it is not set, it doesn't matter,
because it is changed whether it is
empty or not.
T. Toggles : R-AP- <- Make sure ANSI stripping is set to
on!
* On my system, I have the Real Names toggle OFF, and have Anonymous set to
Any Name. It's up to you how you want to do it, just use the above as a
guideline...
III. Change your mail exporting batch files to the include following:
::--------------------------------------
REM - Scan with Renemail

NOTE: Previously, IMPORTER.EXE required your Renegade Data Directory to be
passed in as the first parameter. This is no longer necessary.
::::::::::::::::::::
THAT'S IT!
::::::::::::::::::::
NOW, the hard part. HOW IN THE HECK DO I SEND MAIL? Here's how (and might I
suggest you rip these instructions out of this documentation and post them as
a bulletin).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW DO I ADDRESS AN INTERNET MESSAGE?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A normal Internet address is in the format: userid@system.domain
To send a direct email message:
1. Enter the word "TO:" and the Internet address as the FIRST LINE in your
message. Then skip a line before entering your message. PLEASE NOTE! The
regular Renegade "TO" field is IRRELEVANT! Do NOT depend on this field for
the Internet address!
For example, to send a message to Rich Garrett on the ncoast system you would
address it as:
TO: rgarrett@ncoast.org
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHERE DO I GET INTERNET ADDRESSES?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first step is to make note of who the person is. If the message originated
outside this BBS, you will see that persons address embodied in the first
lines of the message itself.
For example:
From: bclinton@whitehouse.gov (Bill Clinton)
The "(Bill Clinton)" is just an item to tell you the "english" name of the
person. On occasion some rather whimsical names will be entered in this
area instead of real names.
bclinton is the users ID on the system.
whitehouse is the name of the computer where this user gets mail.
gov is the "domain" or subset of the Internet in which the system
"whitehouse" is registered.
An alternate style often used is:
From: Bill Clinton <bclinton@whitehouse.gov>
The Internet mailer used here assumes that the first block of characters
after "TO:" in the FIRST LINE of your message is a valid Internet address.
It will disregard anything after this first block. Therefore, you could
copy all of example #1 (even the "(Bill Clinton)") without problems. That's
because the first block of characters is bclinton@whitehouse.gov, which is
a valid internet address. "(Bill Clinton)" is ignored by the system.
You could not, however, copy example #2's address without modification.
That's because the first block of characters (Bill) is not a valid Internet
address. It would be a simple matter, however, to copy the segment within
the <> characters to your message.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW DO PEOPLE WRITE ME BACK?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's easy, your email address here is:
firstname.lastname@f593.n157.z1.fidonet.org
or
your.handle@f593.n157.z1.fidonet.org
!!! (Change 593 to your node, 157 to your net, and 1 to your zone) !!!
Just put a period between your first and last name and stick
@f593.n157.z1.fidonet.org on the end of it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sending Mail to Compuserve
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To send to compuserve ID# 71234,567
Then address your message "TO: 71234.567@compuserve.com"
note: Compuserve account IDs are pairs of octal numbers. Ordinary
consumer CIS user IDs begin with a `7' as shown.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sending mail to Fidonet
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
!!!! USE THIS AS A GUIDE TO MAKING YOUR OWN INTERNET ADDRESS !!!!
To send to Fidonet
Fidonet ID's have the format Zone:Net/Node.Point
A Fidonet "point" is a mini-bbs designed for the use of just one or a
few users. Not all Fidonet systems have "points".
To send to John Smith at 1:2/3.4
Address your message to "TO: john.smith@p4.f3.n2.z1.fidonet.org"
To send to Mary Smith at 1:2/3
Address your message to "TO: mary.smith@f3.n2.z1.fidonet.org"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sending to AT&T Mail
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To send to AT&T Mail user !ehopper
Address your message to "TO: ehopper@attmail.com"
To send to a SYSTEM connected to AT&T Mail, such as bsm3cca!ehopper
Address your message to "TO: bsm3cca!ehopper@attmail.com"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sending to MCI Mail
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To send to MCI Mail:
To send to MCI Mail user John Smith at MCI Address (123-4567)
send to "TO: 1234567@mcimail.com" (This is the most reliable, unless you
have a specific alpha address)
or send to "TO: JSMITH@mcimail.com" if "JSMITH" is unique
or send to "TO: John_Smith@mcimail.com" if "John Smith" is unique - note
the underscore!
or send to "TO: John_Smith/1234567@mcimail.com" if "John Smith" is NOT unique
::::::::::::::::::::
SPECIAL NOTES
::::::::::::::::::::
If a user's real name, or handle conatins either '.' or '_' characters, such
as Dr. McCoy, they will NOT be able to receive mail. Please advise your users
of this, so they can either have their name changed, or use the name/handle
that does not include these characters.
Bug reports, suggestions, and comments should be netmailed to Jeffrey Miyares
at one of the following addresses:
Fidonet 1:157/593
ITCnet 85:867/112
SBCnet 13:565/0 or 13:565/1 (State Host)
RGSnet 50:500/300
My RGSnet address was removed from RGSNLIST this past week (I've been good,
it's just a clerical error, no doubt). I couldn't say what's going on over
there. Anyhow, I'll be taking over as State Host (Ohio) as soon as they put
out a nodelist with my correct address in it (thank god I'm not waiting for a
liver transplant). When this happens, you will also be able to reach me at
50:500/0. If you try and try and can't get a hold of me, you may call my BBS,
The 2nd Foundation, at (216)871-8129. I always have the most recent copy of
AutoNet available for download (first call). You can also call and see it in
action (yippee!).

THE FUTURE
::::::::::::::::::::
I NEED SUGGESTIONS and/or COMMENTS!!!
::::::::::::::::::::
THANKS TO
::::::::::::::::::::
Cott Lang for a SUPER BBS program.
Norm Henke and Doc White for the explanations on how to address mail, and how
to receive mail. The explanation was almost completely plagarized from
bulletins contained on their system - PC-Ohio (216)381-3320. Probably the
finest BBS in the US (even though it is PCBoard). };>
